Bioware is good at releasing information. Well, sort of. They aren’t typically great at sharing facts, like a teacher might, nor are they good putting whatever facts in context. What they are really good at is timing.
Before Star Wars: The Old Republic came out, Bioware learned the full value of slowly leaking information. Throughout the whole development process, the company gave us well timed peeks of the game; when they felt no one was paying enough attention to them they would ‘lift their skirts’ or ‘flash someone while getting out of a limo,’ so to speak. Every time they would put a piece of the game on display, they regained all that attention they had lost.
I myself would do just about anything to catch an eyeful of what Bioware was up to.
They recently did it again by slowly releasing information about their upcoming SWTOR 1.2 patch. Instead of simply letting people know exactly what was happing, they had to tease us. First they gave us a video. Then they held their Guild summit where they shared future plans to a select group of people, who took notes. Finally they released the patch notes for 1.2.
Of course this, let’s just come and out and say it, striptease is a common marketing practice in the games industry and Bioware has mastered it.
